Lib Dem Councillor Defects to Greens

28 June 2011

Alan Weeks, Hampshire County Councillor for Totton North, has announced his decision to leave the Liberal Democrats and to join the Green Party. Alan will be the first Green Party County Councillor in Hampshire.

Explaining his decision, Alan said:

“When I was campaigning local voters made it clear to me that they were angry about the way they have been let down by the national Lib Dem party. What they were saying was right. I have been a Lib Dem (and Liberal before that) for about 25 years and it is not me that has changed. It is the values of the national Liberal Democrats that have changed. For example, on the tuition fees issue, it was untrustworthy for MPs to break personal pledges that they had made.

“It was a tough decision for me to resign and join the Green Party after almost 25 years of service as a Lib Dem councillor. But my heart has to be in what I do and I could no longer support the direction taken by Lib Dem leaders.

“Now I am looking forward and I am excited to be joining the Green Party. I realise that Green Party values of putting people and the environment before profit, provision and not privatisation of public services, promoting renewable energy and a high priority for animal welfare are in line with mine. After all, I already personally follow the philosophy by driving a car powered by electricity generated by my own PV solar panels.

“I look forward to working with some old friends and new Green friends, in providing a realistic alternative to the Conservative Party in Totton. I intend to work hard so that I continue to be Hampshire’s first Green County Councillor after the next election in 2013.”

Protecting Animals in Democracy endorse Green candidates

Protecting Animals in Democracy (PAD) is endorsing both New Forest Green Party candidates for their animal-friendly policies.

The campaigning group has written the following letter to both Janet Richards and Beverley Golden.

2 May 2010

Thank you very much for responding to the Protecting Animals in Democracy policy questionnaire.

We are pleased to inform you that we have decided to endorse you as the best voting option in your constituency to protect millions of animals from the cruelty of bloodsports, intensive farming and painful experiments. Please feel free to announce this on your website and other media. I have attached a logo for you to use if you wish.

You can view our endorsement by visiting www.vote4animals.org.uk/constituency.htm and clicking on your constituency.

We believe that the way we treat animals is a fundamental indication of the state of our society, and 87% of the public agree, according to a YouGov opinion poll. Your support for measures to protect animals is, therefore, a positive sign that you have the character and values much needed to stand in Parliament and help restore the integrity of our political system.

We wish you the very best of luck in the General Election, and we hope we can work with you in the next Parliament to build a more compassionate society where animals are treated as individuals worthy of respect rather than expendable objects to be exploited and abused.

Kind regards

Dr Dan Lyons

New Forest West Hustings

On Monday 19 April, Trinity Church in Ringwood welcomed a full house of local people to hear their Parliamentary Candidates reply to a range of questions.

Janet Richards shared the platform with Desmond Swayne (Con), Janice Hurne (Lab), Michael Plummer (Lib Dem) and Martin Lyon (UKIP).

Each gave a three minute introductory speech. Janet's was informative and well researched. She related her topics to Green Party policy – not all candidates managed this in spite of the men being confident public speakers.

The evening livened up as it progressed, and there was more interaction and comment from the floor.

The Vicar kept good order and the candidates applauded each other politely and sometimes even agreed with each other's answers.

If you have the chance to attend a hustings it is a very good way to really find out about your voting choices in New Forest West.

For me it confirmed that a vote for Janet Richards is the right choice.
